Bring your binoculars and birding books or make use of the local birding guides. They are trained locally at Bird Life South Africa training centre. See the brochures on the coffee table in the kitchen or else at the Wild Turkey.

If history is your passion visit Oppikoppi museum rigth across from the Mucky Duck Pub in the main street. Besides the numerous artefacts from the Boer War the woners is a previous Mayor of the town and expert on local knowledge.

For the fit, you can climb or cycle up the Ossewa mountain facing the town on the south side. There is also a 4x4 track to the top from where you will have a spectacular view of the town and country side. Ideal spot for a champagne breakfast or sundowner.

Flyfishing can be done at Balalele Mountain Lodge with prior arrangement.

Another favourite spot to visit for a sundowner or just an outing is the Zaaihoek Dam. Here is a map of the route.

Carp and barbel can be cought in Martin's Dam just outside town on your way to Piet Retief and of course in the Zaaihoek Dam. Buy fishing tackle and bait at the Wild Turkey.

Cycling in town or outside on the well known routes is another favourite pastime.
